Polished stainless steel pipe is round tube whose outside surface has been mechanically finished after forming, from a 180 grit satin through to a 600 grit mirror. It is the product used wherever the tube is visible: handrails, balustrades, furniture, shopfitting, food equipment and architectural framing. On tube the polishing runs circumferentially or longitudinally depending on the machine. For balustrade posts and rails, longitudinal grain is normal and looks correct along a run; for furniture legs and short sections, circumferential is common. Specify which you need, because mixing the two in one installation is visible.

Thin Wall Stainless Steel Tube

Thin wall tube, generally taken to mean walls of 1.5 mm and below, is used where weight, cost or appearance matter more than pressure capacity. It is the standard product for handrails, furniture and decorative framing, and it makes up most polished tube sold.

Weight per metre is (OD minus wall) multiplied by wall multiplied by 0.0251 for austenitic grades.

Three cautions with thin wall. It dents and creases if it is over-clamped or badly supported during bending, so mandrel bending is normally required rather than rotary draw alone. It cannot be threaded. And it is not a pressure product: for fluid service under pressure, use scheduled pipe instead, since thin wall ornamental tube is not hydrostatically tested and carries no pressure rating.

What Polishing Changes, and What It Does Not

Polishing removes a few micrometres of surface material and leaves the same alloy exposed. Nothing is plated or added, so there is no coating that can flake or wear through. Three things do change:

  • Appearance. This is the main purpose, and on tube it also hides the longitudinal weld seam, which is visible on mill-finish product.
  • Cleanability. A smoother surface holds less soil and is easier to wipe down, which is why food and pharmaceutical equipment specifies polished tube with an Ra limit.
  • Corrosion resistance, marginally. Fewer crevices mean less anchorage for moisture and chloride, so a polished surface performs slightly better than a rough one in the same environment. The improvement is real but small; it does not turn 304 into a coastal material.

What does not change is strength, wall thickness rating or grade behaviour. A polished 304 rail in salt air will still tea stain, so choose the grade for the environment first.

Fabrication

  • Keep the film on through cutting, bending, drilling and installation. Remove it only when the job is complete.
  • Mandrel bend visible tube. Non-mandrel bending flattens the outside of the bend and wrinkles the inside, both of which show badly on a polished surface. Centreline radii of 2 to 3 times diameter are standard for handrail work.
  • Weld from concealed positions where possible. A weld on a polished face must be dressed and repolished, and matching a mirror in the field is not realistic.
  • Use stainless-only tooling and abrasives. Free iron from carbon steel tools will rust on the polished surface within days.
  • Passivate after grinding or welding, then re-film.

What is the difference between stainless steel and polished stainless steel?
They are the same metal. Polished stainless steel is ordinary stainless tube or sheet whose surface has been abraded and buffed to a specified finish, from satin to mirror, after it left the mill. Nothing is added, so there is no coating to peel, and the alloy, wall thickness and strength are unchanged. What differs is appearance, cleanability, and a small improvement in corrosion resistance because a smoother surface gives moisture and chloride less to hold onto. On tube, polishing also removes the visible longitudinal weld seam.
Is polished stainless steel expensive?
Polishing is a processing charge on top of the tube. A No.4 satin finish typically adds 10 to 20 percent over mill-finish tube of the same size. A 600 grit mirror adds 40 to 80 percent, because it requires several successive abrasive stages, buffing, film protection and much more careful handling and packing. The grade still dominates the total cost, so polished 304 usually works out cheaper than mill-finish 316L.
How do you polish stainless steel tubing?
Industrially, on a tube polishing machine: the tube rotates or traverses against a series of abrasive belts of decreasing grit, typically 120, then 180, then 240 and upward, with each stage removing the scratch pattern of the previous one. A mirror finish adds a buffing stage with polishing compound on a cloth wheel. By hand the same sequence applies with a variable-speed angle grinder and abrasive belts, always finishing in one consistent direction. The critical rule either way is not to skip grits: jumping from 120 to 400 leaves the coarse scratches visible under the bright surface.
Does polished stainless steel last?
Yes, because the finish is the metal rather than a coating and cannot wear off. What changes with time is contamination and mechanical damage: free iron picked up from carbon steel tools shows as rust spots, chlorides pit 304 in coastal or pool environments, and abrasive cleaning dulls a mirror. A 316L polished rail in a marine setting will still look right after decades if it is rinsed and cleaned properly. Choose the right grade, avoid abrasive and chloride cleaners, and the finish outlives the building fitout.
Can polished tube be used for pressure or fluid service?
Ornamental polished tube to A554 is not a pressure product: it is not hydrostatically tested and carries no pressure rating, and thin walls of 1.0 to 1.5 mm are not intended for containment. For fluid under pressure, use scheduled pipe to ASTM A312, which can also be supplied polished externally. For hygienic product lines, use tube to ASTM A270 with a certified internal surface finish, which is a different specification again and controls the inside rather than the outside.
Which wall thickness should I use for a handrail?
For a 42.4 or 48.3 mm handrail, 1.5 mm wall is the normal specification and 2.0 mm where the rail must resist impact or where loading codes are strict. For 25 to 32 mm infill and secondary rails, 1.2 mm is sufficient. Below 1.0 mm the tube dents too easily for anything at hand height. Check the applicable barrier loading standard, since it sets the requirement rather than appearance does.
How should a polished finish be cleaned in service?
Warm water with a mild detergent on a soft cloth, wiped along the grain on satin finishes, then rinsed and dried to avoid water spotting. Never use abrasive pads, wire wool, or any cleaner containing chloride or bleach. Fingerprints on mirror tube come off with a proprietary stainless cleaner or a little isopropyl alcohol. Satin finishes can be blended locally with a matching abrasive pad if they are scratched; a mirror cannot be repaired in place.
