Stainless steel square bar is solid square section supplied in straight lengths, used for machined blanks, frames, decorative posts, keys, guide rails and fabricated brackets. Walmay stocks it from 6x6 mm to 150x150 mm in 316L, 316, 304, 304L, 303, 430 and 2205 duplex, to ASTM A276 and EN 10088-3, hot rolled and pickled or cold drawn and bright, in 3 metre and 6 metre lengths or cut to size with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.

A square bar is about 27 percent heavier than a round bar of the same nominal size, because the square section has more area than the inscribed circle. That is worth checking when substituting one for the other in a machining job.

The corner radius catches designers out. A hot-rolled 50 mm square bar can carry a 5 mm corner radius, so a part that must sit in a machined square pocket with sharp internal corners will not seat. Either specify cold drawn, or machine the corners, or design the pocket with matching radii.

The honest answer on strength is that it depends on the loading and on how the comparison is set up. For the same cross-sectional area, a square bar has a higher section modulus than a round one about its flat axis, so it is stiffer in bending in that direction. In torsion the round bar wins clearly, because the corners of a square contribute almost nothing to torsional resistance and concentrate stress. For rotating shafts, always round. For static beams, brackets and machined blanks, square is usually the better and cheaper starting point because it wastes less material on the way to a rectangular finished part.

For welded frames, 316L and 304L avoid sensitisation in the heat-affected zone without a post-weld anneal. For guide rails and wear surfaces, austenitic grades gall and a hardened martensitic grade lasts far longer.

Solid Square Bar, Square Rod and Hollow Sections

Solid and hollow square products are frequently confused at enquiry stage, and they are entirely different items. Note first that stainless steel square rod and square bar are two names for one product: rod tends to be used for smaller sizes and in machining contexts, bar in stockholding and structural contexts, and both are supplied to ASTM A276.

If the part must be light and the load is bending or torsion over a span, hollow square tube is far more material efficient. If it will be machined, drilled through, threaded, or must resist local crushing at a clamp, solid square bar is the correct choice.

Fabrication

Square bar cuts on a bandsaw or cold saw and clamps easily in a vice or milling fixture, which is its main practical advantage over round. Cold bending is possible in the smaller sections with a generous radius, but square bar distorts at the bend, bulging on the outside face, so visible work should be induction bent or machined instead. Welding uses 316L filler on 316L and 308L on 304. Austenitic bar work hardens, so machining needs positive feeds, sharp carbide, flood coolant and a rigid setup.

FAQs

Is a square bar stronger than a round bar?
It depends on the load. For the same cross-sectional area, a square bar has a higher section modulus about its flat axis, so it is stiffer and stronger in bending in that direction. In torsion the round bar is clearly better, because the corners of a square contribute little to torsional resistance and act as stress concentrations. For the same nominal size rather than the same area, the square is 27 percent heavier and therefore stronger, but that is a weight comparison rather than an efficiency one. Rotating shafts should always be round; static brackets and machined blanks are usually better as square.
What is solid square steel called?
Square bar is the standard term, and square rod is used interchangeably, particularly in smaller sizes. When drawn to a tight tolerance for machine keys it is called key steel. The important distinction is against hollow products: square tube, square hollow section or SHS, and box section are all hollow and are supplied to different standards with different tolerances. If a drawing simply says square section, confirm whether it is solid or hollow before ordering, because the price and weight differ by a factor of several.
Which type of stainless steel is better, 304 or 420?
They are for different jobs. 304 is austenitic, corrosion resistant, easily welded and formed, non-magnetic when annealed, and cannot be hardened by heat treatment beyond what cold work gives. 420 is martensitic with much more carbon, hardens to 50 to 55 HRC, and is used for blades, moulds and wear surfaces, but it welds poorly and resists corrosion far less. As square bar, choose 304 or 316L for frames, brackets and general machined parts, and 420 where the part is a guide, wear block or cutting edge.
What is the price of a 20 foot stainless steel square pipe?
That question is about hollow square tube rather than solid square bar, and the difference in weight is large: a 20 foot length of 50x50 mm solid bar weighs about 122 kg, while the same length in 50x50 mm tube with a 2 mm wall weighs about 19 kg. Both are priced per tonne against alloy surcharges, so the tube costs roughly a sixth as much per length. Confirm whether your drawing calls for solid bar or hollow section before comparing quotations.
How sharp are the corners on square bar?
Hot-rolled bar carries a rolled corner radius of up to 0.1 times the side dimension, so a 50 mm bar can have a 5 mm radius. Cold-drawn bar is sharper, at up to 0.05 times the side. Neither is a machined sharp corner. If the part must seat in a square pocket with internal corners, either specify cold drawn and allow for the residual radius, machine the corners, or design matching radii into the mating part.
Do you supply square bar in 316L for welded frames?
Yes, and 316L is the right choice for a welded frame in chloride service. Its 0.030 percent carbon ceiling prevents chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, so the joint keeps its corrosion resistance without a post-weld solution anneal, which is impractical on an assembled frame. Weld with 316L filler and passivate afterwards, since weld heat tint is chromium depleted and will pit in exactly the service the grade was chosen for.
Can you cut and mill square bar to a drawing?
Yes. We cut to plus or minus 1 mm, mill faces and slots, drill, tap, deburr and polish, and we can supply finished machined blocks to drawing with a dimensional report. On repeat orders we retain the fixtures so batches are identical, and cutting at our works normally costs less than the offcut and handling it replaces.
