If a bar has to fit a bore or run in a bearing, order it ground: the tolerance is fivefold tighter than cold drawn and it saves a turning operation. If it will be machined all over anyway, buy hot rolled and take the saving.

Imperial diameters from 1/8 inch to 10 inch are also stocked. Note the effect of squaring: doubling the diameter quadruples the weight, so a 100 mm bar costs four times as much per metre as a 50 mm one.

304 Stainless Steel Round Bar

304 is the default grade for round bar and covers most general engineering. Its composition is 18 to 20 percent chromium and 8 to 10.5 percent nickel with a carbon ceiling of 0.08 percent, and 304L reduces carbon to 0.030 percent for welded work.

Where the part will be welded and cannot be annealed afterwards, order 304L. Where it needs strength, note that cold-drawn 304 comfortably exceeds the annealed minimum, so a drawing calling for 400 MPa yield can often be met in 304 without moving to a higher-alloy grade. Grade alternatives:

Rod or Bar

The two words are used interchangeably in most of the industry, and both refer to the same solid circular product. Where a distinction is drawn:

For ordering purposes, always give the diameter, the delivery condition and the tolerance class rather than relying on the word: a 20 mm cold-drawn round bar and a 20 mm ground shaft are the same grade and diameter but not the same product.

Machining

304 work hardens ahead of the cutting edge and produces long, gummy chips. Reduce surface speed 20 to 30 percent below carbon steel, keep the feed positive and constant, take a depth of cut that reaches below the layer hardened by the previous pass, and flood with coolant. Sharp carbide with positive rake and a rigid setup make more difference than any change in speed. Where machining dominates the cost and corrosion is mild, 303 is the free-machining alternative, with sulphur added to break chips; do not substitute it in corrosive service, because those sulphide inclusions initiate pitting. What Determines the Price

Round bar is priced per tonne against live alloy surcharges, then adjusted for four things: grade, since 316 runs 25 to 40 percent above 304 and 2205 or 904L considerably more; diameter, because small cold-drawn sizes carry more processing per kilogram than heavy hot-rolled ones; condition, since ground bar costs 15 to 30 percent above cold drawn and peeled bar sits between; and quantity. To compare quotations, convert to weight using the table above, then apply the per-tonne figure.

Corrosion Resistance and Its Limits

Stainless steel is not rust proof. It is corrosion resistant because chromium above about 10.5 percent forms a passive oxide film that reforms when damaged, provided oxygen is available. Three situations defeat it, and all three appear in bar applications:

  • Chlorides. Salt water, coastal air, de-icing salt and pool chemistry pit 304. Use 316L or duplex.
  • Crevices and oxygen starvation. Under a washer, inside a threaded joint or beneath a deposit, the film cannot reform, and corrosion proceeds even in a grade that is fine on open surfaces. This is why bolted 304 fittings fail at the joint faces first.
  • Free iron contamination. Machining, grinding or storing stainless with carbon steel tools transfers iron particles that rust on the surface. Passivation after machining removes them.

A bar that will be used outdoors, in a joint or in water should be selected for the environment and passivated after machining, not simply ordered as stainless.

What is the price of a stainless steel round bar?
Round bar is priced per tonne against live nickel and chromium surcharges, then adjusted for grade, diameter, delivery condition and quantity, so there is no standing figure. Convert to weight to compare quotations: a 25 mm bar weighs 3.89 kg per metre and a 50 mm bar weighs 15.58 kg per metre, four times as much, because weight scales with the square of diameter. Small cold-drawn sizes carry a higher price per tonne than heavy hot-rolled bar, and centreless ground bar adds 15 to 30 percent over cold drawn.
Which is cheaper, 304 or 316 stainless?
304 is cheaper, typically by 25 to 40 percent for the same bar. The difference comes from 316's 2 to 3 percent molybdenum and its higher nickel content, both of which are surcharged separately and both of which are more expensive than the chromium that dominates 304. Since their mechanical properties are identical, the premium buys chloride resistance and nothing else, which is why specifying 316 for a dry indoor application wastes money.
What is a round bar called?
Round bar, rod and shafting all describe solid circular stainless section, and in most of the industry the terms are interchangeable. Round bar is the standard industrial description and the one used in ASTM A276 and EN 10088-3. Rod tends to be used for smaller diameters and in welding and fastener contexts. Shafting means round bar ground to a tight tolerance for rotating service. Billet refers to large-section input for forging, not a finished product, and rebar is ribbed concrete reinforcement, an entirely different item.
Is stainless steel 100% rust proof?
No. It is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. Chromium above about 10.5 percent forms a passive oxide film that self-repairs when oxygen is present, and that is what keeps the metal bright. Three things break it: chlorides, which pit 304 in coastal air, salt water and pool environments; crevices and oxygen-starved areas such as bolted joints and threads, where the film cannot reform; and free iron transferred from carbon steel tools, which rusts on the surface and looks like grade failure. Correct grade selection, crevice-free design and passivation after machining address all three.
Should I order cold drawn, peeled or ground bar?
Ground bar where the diameter must fit something: bearing seats, sliding fits, hydraulic rods, anywhere an h9 tolerance of about minus 0.05 mm at 25 mm is needed. Cold drawn for general machining, fasteners and pins, where h11 at about minus 0.13 mm is sufficient and the bright surface is convenient. Peeled and polished for larger shafting stock from 20 to 120 mm. Hot rolled where the part will be fully machined or forged and the rolled tolerance of plus or minus 0.5 to 1.5 mm is irrelevant.
Is 304 round bar magnetic?
Not in the annealed condition, but a slight magnetic response after machining or cold drawing is normal. Cold work transforms a little austenite to martensite at the surface, and that is what a magnet picks up. It does not indicate the wrong grade. Where genuinely non-magnetic material is required after machining, 310S and 904L have far more stable austenite; a solution anneal after machining also restores 304 to non-magnetic.
Can you supply bar cut, turned and threaded?
Yes. We cut to plus or minus 1 mm, centreless grind, turn, drill, thread and polish, and we can supply finished machined components to drawing. On repeat work we hold the setups so successive batches are dimensionally identical. Cutting to a list at our works normally costs less than the offcut and handling it saves, and it reduces the shipped weight.
