Stainless steel strip is narrow flat product slit from cold rolled coil, supplied from 0.05 mm to 3.0 mm thick and 4 mm to 600 mm wide. It is the feedstock for stamped parts, springs, clips, gaskets, tube making, banding and trim, and it is sold either as a coil, sometimes called a strip roll, or as cut lengths. Tighter tolerances are available on precision-rolled strip. For stamped parts the thickness tolerance is usually what governs die life and part consistency, so it is worth specifying rather than accepting the standard.

Temper and Mechanical Properties

Cold rolling after annealing raises strength dramatically, and the temper you order should follow the forming the part needs.

301 rather than 304 is the usual choice for spring strip, because its slightly leaner nickel content makes it work harden faster and reach higher strength for the same rolling reduction.

Edge condition matters more than it appears in fatigue applications. A slitting burr is a stress raiser, so springs and diaphragms should be ordered with a rolled edge, not simply deburred.

The distinction is width, and it is a real product boundary rather than a naming convention.

Two consequences matter commercially. Strip can be held to tighter thickness and width tolerances than sheet, because it is slit rather than sheared and often re-rolled to gauge. And strip is available in tempered conditions from annealed through to spring hard, which sheet generally is not, because narrow width makes controlled cold rolling practical.

State the coil inner diameter, maximum outer diameter and maximum coil weight your equipment can handle. A coil that will not fit the decoiler is the most common avoidable delivery problem in strip supply.

Stainless Steel Metal Strips in Cut Lengths

Where volume does not justify coil handling, we supply flat cut strips: slit to width, levelled, cut to length and deburred. Common formats are 1, 2 and 3 metre lengths, and strips can be supplied edge dressed and polished for visible trim work. Cut strips are also the practical format for gaskets, shims, packers, banding and repair work, and for spring steel parts where the blank is short.

For trim and cover strips in visible positions, specify a polished finish and a rolled edge, since an as-slit edge is sharp and shows a witness line where it meets a surface.

Cutting and Forming Strip

Strip is normally processed on presses and roll formers rather than cut by hand, but hand cutting comes up often enough to be worth stating clearly.

Two cautions. Never cut stainless with an abrasive disc that has been used on carbon steel, because embedded iron will rust on the cut edge. And on hard tempers, heat from grinding softens the material locally, so springs and blades should be cut cold by waterjet or shear.

What Determines the Price

Strip is priced per tonne against live alloy surcharges, then adjusted for four processing factors. Thinner gauges cost more per tonne because they need more cold rolling passes and more careful handling; narrow widths cost more per tonne because each slitting pass yields less weight; harder tempers cost more because they require controlled rolling; and edge dressing, polishing and traverse winding each add a charge. Grade dominates: 430 sits well below 304, and 316L runs 25 to 40 percent above it.

To compare quotations, calculate the weight of what you actually need: width in millimetres multiplied by thickness in millimetres multiplied by 0.008 gives kilograms per metre of strip.

What is a stainless steel strip?

Where can I find stainless steel trim strips?
Decorative trim strips for edges, corners and joints are supplied as polished strip with a dressed or rolled edge, usually in 304 with a No.4 brushed or mirror finish, in widths from 10 to 100 mm and thicknesses of 0.5 to 1.5 mm. Hardware retailers stock short lengths of standard profiles for repairs. For a project, order slit strip to your exact width with the edge and finish specified, which is cheaper than a proprietary trim and lets you match an existing installation.
What is the price of stainless steel strips?

Thin gauges and narrow widths cost more per tonne because there is more processing per kilogram. Grade dominates: 430 sits well below 304 and 316L runs 25 to 40 percent above it. How do you cut a stainless steel strip?
For thin strip up to about 0.8 mm, aviation shears or tin snips work, accepting some edge deformation. Up to 3 mm, a bench shear or guillotine gives a clean cut with no heat. For profiles and cutouts, laser or waterjet. In production, strip is blanked in a press. An angle grinder with a thin cutting disc cuts any thickness quickly but heats and discolours the metal, and it must be a disc that has never touched carbon steel, since embedded iron rusts on the cut edge. On spring tempers, avoid grinding altogether, because local heating softens the material.
Which temper should I order?
Match the temper to the forming the part requires. Annealed for deep drawing and severe forming. Quarter or half hard for parts with simple bends that also need strength, such as clips and brackets. Three quarter hard, full hard or spring temper for springs, retainers and shims, where the part is essentially flat or lightly formed and strength is the point. Ordering a hard temper for a part that needs bending will crack it; ordering annealed for a spring will give a part that does not return.
Is strip available polished, and on both faces?
Yes. Strip is supplied 2B, BA, 2D, No.4 brushed or mirror polished, on one or both faces, with PVC film on polished surfaces. Note that polishing is done before slitting on wide coil, so a polished strip has a finished top and bottom face and two as-slit edges; if the edges will be visible, specify a rolled or dressed edge as well.
What coil dimensions should I specify?
Give the inner diameter your decoiler needs, commonly 200, 300, 400 or 500 mm, the maximum outer diameter it can accept, and the maximum coil weight your handling equipment can lift. For long production runs ask about traverse-wound coils, which hold far more length in a manageable package and reduce coil changes substantially.
