304L Stainless Steel Pipe

304L stainless steel pipe is an ultra-low carbon austenitic stainless steel pipe with a carbon content ≤0.03%.

It is manufactured through cold drawing or hot rolling processes and available in both seamless and welded types.

  • Low-carbon corrosion resistance for welding

With carbon content ≤0.03%, 304L maintains intergranular corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone after welding, eliminating the need for post-weld heat treatment.

  • Ample stock and flexible delivery

Walmay Group keeps regular inventory of Φ19–219 mm seamless pipes and Φ19–1220 mm welded pipes, supporting small-batch customization and fast delivery.

  • Strict quality control with full traceability

Each batch comes with a Walmay material test certificate. Every pipe undergoes hydrostatic testing (per ASTM A1016) and eddy current inspection before shipment.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  • Density: 7.93 g/cm³ (same as 304), convenient for structural weight calculation.

  • Melting Point: 1398–1454°C, stable for continuous service between –196°C and 800°C, suitable for cryogenic tanks and medium-temperature pipelines.

  • Thermal Conductivity: 16 W/(m·K) at 20°C; thermal expansion coefficient: 17.2×10⁻⁶/°C (0–100°C). Good thermal compatibility with carbon steel and concrete, minimizing thermal stress during installation.

  • Magnetism: Non-magnetic in the solution-annealed condition; slight magnetism may appear after cold working, without affecting use in food or electronics industries.

Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)

Chemical Properties

  • Corrosion Resistance: In a 3.5% NaCl salt spray test, no rust spots after 500 hours. In 5% citric acid at 25°C, corrosion rate ≤0.01 mm/year. Suitable for food contact and drinking water pipelines (compliant with GB 4806.9-2016).

  • Intergranular Corrosion Resistance: Tested per GB/T 4334.5-2015 with no intergranular cracking, ideal for welded piping systems.

FAQs

What is 304L stainless steel pipe?
304L is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel pipe (C ≤ 0.03%) offering excellent weldability and corrosion resistance.
What's the difference between seamless and welded 304L pipes?
Seamless pipes have no weld seam and suit high-pressure use; welded pipes are cost-effective for large diameters and low-pressure systems.
How does 304L differ from 304?
304L has lower carbon content, preventing carbide precipitation during welding and improving resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Is 304L stainless steel corrosion resistant?
Yes. It performs well in chloride, acid, and humid environments, suitable for food, chemical, and water systems.
What are the main applications of 304L pipes?
Food processing, pharmaceuticals, chemical transport, water supply, and architectural structures.
